Hard Candy renown iPhone and iPod Touch case maker has unveiled a new case for the as yet un-released iPod Touch, most interestingly confirms a rear facing camera. Just above the camera whole is another small opening which is likely for volume buttons. Dock connecter and headphone at the bottom, with the dock almost slanted.

It also gives away the shape of the back of the touch which is still curved rather than the flat design of the iPhone 4. Full details of the iPod Touch are expected to be announced later today at Apples Special Event later today.

This is big news and it’s a win for all jailbreakers who like to liberate there iDevices. Jailbreaking is now considered fair under the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) thanks to a ruling yesterday started by the EFF (Electronics Frontier Foundation) around 18 months ago. The ruling effectively solves any conflict between copyright and fair use.
Apple has always been anti jailbreaking and insisted it was illegal however most users either were not aware that it may be illegal or not concerned. Either way the Library of congress has now ammended the DMCA that people can modify their handsets and install software from 3rd party sources for personal use.
This is a small excerpt from the EFF requests referring to jailbreaking and rooting phones:
Computer programs that enable wireless telephone handsets to execute software applications, where circumvention is accomplished for the sole purpose of enabling interoperability of such applications, when they have been lawfully obtained, with computer programs on the telephone handset.
This doesn’t mean Apple is going to start selling iPhones or iPod touches pre-jailbroken, it does mean however the developers of the jailbreaking community and the users who jailbreak their devices cannot be prosecuted for doing so. However it will still void your warranty.
Exemptions to the DMCA ruling:
- Unlocking mobile phones to change carriers
- Cracking of video game digital rights management controls to probe security flaws
- Documentary makers, professors and even students can decrypt DVDs to use the video for educational purpose and commentary
- Visually challenged can circumvent locks on e-books to enable read-aloud features.
- Bypassing of broken or irreplaceable dongles

Were not exactly sure what effects this update may have for iPod Touch owners but iPhone devs are warning against updating from iOS4 if you plan on jailbreaking when spirit jailbreak is going to be released soon.

Retailer John lewis has let slip what may be some of the upcoming features on the Next Generation iPod Touch expected to be announced in September 2010. The retailer were cited for saying “noises we’re hearing from suppliers” and had a slideshow which listed the following features:
- 5MP Camera able to record in HD
- Face Time capability
-
Accelerometer and Gyroscope
It’s expected to pack the new A4 Processor, some of these are good news, the gyroscope isn’t much of a suprise considering the iPod Touch is touted as a Music and Gaming device therefore it will need to be able to take advantage of the apps that will use the new features we saw with the iPhone 4.
No news yet but hopefully it will also have the retina display, we would also love to see GPS but afaik this is unlikely to appear in the iPod Touch anytime soon.
Do you plan on buying a new iPod Touch in September?
