As the iPod touch doesn’t come with a manual we have compiled the ultimate list of tips and tricks for operating and managing your iPod touch with more control:
Update: It took us a while but we have finally updated the list with all the new tips and tricks from newer os revisions and those submitted by the comments.
1 Quick Music Controls
Double clicking the home button in any application, or with the screen off will bring up the music controls.
2Force App Exit
To completely exit an application to save battery power. Press and holding the home button for approximately 5-8 seconds. This will help boost battery life if you run lots of different apps regularly.
3 Quick Symbol Input
Holding down letters on the keyboard will pop up the accents/symbols associated with those letters. Once it pops up, slide your finger over to the accent/symbol you like.
4 Delete Mail
When you’re in the Mail apps inbox view, slide your finger from left to right on a message and a ‘delete’ button will appear. This also applies in the list view of the Videos application.
5 Zoom in
In Safari double tap to zoom in. You can also “pinch” (putting your thumb and index finger on the screen and pinching in and out) to zoom in Safari and in Pictures.
6 Charge from any USB Port
You can charge your iPod Touch from any powered USB port. Such as a computer, printer, media centre.
7 Video Resume
If your watching a video and want to resume it later tap the “done” button and it will remember the videos progress next time you open it. Same with music/podcasts.
8 Larger Keyboard
When typing a lot of text in Safari turn it to horizontal view. The keyboard will be bigger and you can get a better grip of the Touch while typing with two thumbs.
9 Quick Number Input
When typing if you want to add something from the numbers keyboard just hold down the numbers and slide your finger to the number or symbol you want, and release. It will take you back to your letters keyboard. This also works by holding the ‘shift’ key and sliding your finger to apply capital letters.
10 View the url before you visit
When viewing a website in Safari, if you want to check the url of a link before clicking it, hold your finger on the link and a bubble will appear showing the URL that the link is tied to.
11 Open Links in New Window
A quick way to open a link in a new window in Safari is to open a new page, tap the bookmarks icon, tap the history folder and direct yourself to the last page you were just on and open the link from there.
12 Audiobook Chapters
When listening to an audiobook, iTunes and your iPod create a new chapter list unrelated to the subject of the book. It’s accessible using the same control used for viewing audio tracks (upper right of screen).
13 Fix Typo’s
Make a typo? Press and hold the word you spelt wrong and a magnifying glass will appear. Slide your finger back and forwth to move the cursor.
14 Finish your sentence
When typing, if you press the space bar twice after a word it will insert a period and another space.
15 Horizontal Keyboard for IM’ing
If you wish to use the horizontal keyboard to chat on AIM, MSN, Yahoo, GTalk, ICQ, etc. Using Safari go to the site www.meebo.com and use it there.
16 Map quick Zoom out
In Google Maps, double tapping zooms in as expected, but single tapping with two fingers zooms out.
17 Movie Controls
When watching a movie press pause and press foward ( but don’t release it ) this will make your video go slow motion to fast foward just dont press pause beforehand.
18 Quick Tap
When you’re scrolling through a long webpage in Safari – if you tap the bar at the top of your screen containing the time and battery, Safari will automatically scroll up to the top of the document/page and the show address bar.

Thanks for all the tips! When I exited out of music once, a small gray box appeared with a large volume icon box appeared and had a slider with boxes to change the volume. This was NOT the double-tap home button menu. I’ve been trying to figure out the shortcut for this, but so far I haven’t seen it again. Can you help me?
Thanks,

An excelent tip for Ipod touch or ipod phones.
I have found that by wrapping a clean cloth around my finger it avoids finger marks and grease marks on my ipod touch screen. One could make a cloth finger sleeve or cloth thimble to use as an add on for the ipod touch or iphone.

hi cory. Been on youtube, just type in iPod touch volume. It seems to be that when you are adjusting the volume then press home it does that. I think that the funny volume thing is there for when you use the contrller when its in the dock so that its easier to when you are far away from it.

A single press of the power button whilst using the Touch will power off the screen and lock the iPod but continue to play music etc…just press the home key to resume the screen. Saves accidental pressing and saves power!

If you’ve used my previous tip regarding ‘standby mode’ try this – whilst at black screen but listening to music, double press the home button to bring up music controls without unlocking the Touch. Just hit the power button again to send back to standby (or wait 1 minute and it will return to standby regardless of auto-lock timeout).

by Joey
13 Dec 2008 at 21:35
To Hexxys:
You have a 2nd generation iPod touch, and Cory Wilson has a 1st generation, so Cory doesn’t have the volume rocker on the side, but you do. The reason the grey box shows, Cory, is because it’s in the 1st generation’s code, but it’s never used because the 1st generation has no volume rocker.

If anyone wants to see what any application is like before buying/installing it, you should check it TheIpodKid on YouTube. This guy covers nearly all the new apps that are being released and reviews each 1.
Hope That Helps..

I had problems connecting my Touch to the internet. Solved it by going into the control page for my netgear router (don’t know if this bis unique to this make) then put in the mac code fot the Touch (its in Settings/general/wifi on the Touch) save this and then try to reconnect. The Touch will ask for your wep key for your router, enter this and you should be connected.

@ Jay
You may already have found the answer yourself Jay but if you right click on the album without any art in i-tunes, then select the “artwork” tab, you can add a jpeg/bmp/png file as an album cover. Don’t forget to re-synch though.
You can also edit album or song info in the same way.

09 Jan 2009 at 06:43
Cory wilson. When you double click the home button, a boc appears witha fastforward, rewind, pause/play and volume button. If you slide the volume button back and forth while double clicking the home button, the icon you described will appear. This happened to me and i tried many different things to firgur it out. Now when i try it, his shortcut only works some of the time. Also, with the built in volume key, the ipod 3G has this when you change the volume with the volume key.

Oh my Gosh guys. For all those people with questions like “y cant i connect to internet?” or “What’s the password?” You can’t steal other people’s Wi-Fi. That’s why they have passwords. You can’t connect with the Internet because you didn’t pay for it and you DON’T know the password. Geez, if you want T3H INTERNETZ so badly, buy a Wi-Fi device. Sheesh.

Okay, so, I’ve been on the internet with my ipos and it works. I have wireless connection so I just go on it when I’m in my bed or something. I was on it this morning and all of a sudden, it says it can not connect because it could not find the server. When I check the signal, it says I was still connected to my wireless connection and I had the three bars and everything. I waited all day because I thought maybe it was just a temperary thing but hours it still wont connect back. It just…stopped working. I would like a possible answer to why this happened or at least theories. Is it possible that by browsing a certain site that it made it messed up? :S
I would really like some help, because I’m confused at the fact that it suddenly stopped working while I was using it and how I can not use it even though it shows I am still connected.

Hmm… I see no one else covered this yet, but if you press the sleep/power button and the home button at the same time, it will take a screen shot of whatever you are doing at the moment.

In addition to the home/power button screen capture.. when you plug the iPod in to your computer (well on my vista pc anyway), it will recognise it as a digital camara an you can naviagte to the screen caputre in windows explorer.. without using iTunes. Unfortunately, it looks like it’s read only, so you can’t actually use it as portable storage. But at least there is something you don’t have to use iTunes for.
by Adam
12 Feb 2009 at 09:09
You CAN USE ANY USB port to charge but IT HAS TO BE USB 2.0. PS2 was long before USB 2.0 came about. You can change your dock items by holding down on any app until they start to shake then just drag that app into your dock.

Hey I see a lot of ppl are having trouble.
I have some answers.
Okay, if your iPod touch can’t sence your finger try to re-boot. If still nothing use customer support at apple.com.
If your safari isn’t working (Duh) buy wireless for your home.
Now, here is something not posted yet, I read EVERY COMMENT AND FORUM ON THIS PAGE
It’s mostly just for messin with ur friend with a 2G.
Hold the volume up button and press the home twice.
It makes it where they can’t turn the volume down LOL. To deactivate it press the volume up button THEN the volume down button will work again.

Hey this is for Gabriel (feb2)
Im sure your ipod touch works normally now, but heres a reason. The ipod touch is heat sensitive (unlike the nintendo ds).. So it may have been that your finger was too cold (since you were outside) or you were using your fingernail. Also if your ipod touch is warm, it is harder for it to sense your finger.
Btw, i think the only way too change your springboard wallpaper is to have your ipod touch jailbroken.
I hope this stuff helps

Haft of the post here are about the screen capture. And NO YOU ARE NOT THE FIRST ONES TO POST IT. Read before you post. Sheesh. And to those who cant connect, its not the ipod that has a problem, most of the time its the router or dsl modems. But in most cases posted here, the problem is the user.

for the people with the strange behaviour with the time changing… it has to do with ITunes being open and the PC going to sleep. It will default to Cupertino time again. So…, if you put your machine to sleep (like a laptop), make sure you shut down ITunes FIRST. Then it will work properly.

I had the same internet connection problem with my iPod, to solve this you need to go to the adress bar in the Internet, (even though it dosn’t work) and type in your routers ID. It will bring you to a login screen where you need to type in superuser as the username, and put in your internet password (assuming it’s a protected network). Look for a list that Is titled MAC adress, this is where you type in your iPods mac adress, this is like telling the Internet to allow the iPod to use it. On your iPod, go to settings>general>about. It will be titled wi-fi adress, that will be your mac adress. Just type it in on the MAC adress list, reconnect, and you’re good to go! Hope I helped!

Hi Ive had an Ipod since I got it frm santa clause, and guess what! I discovered how to make a screenshot by doing what thousands of people have told us already, and then all of the sudden it wasn’t working anymore then by chance just now my iPod ran out of battery and turned off and that happened about just as I typed in “Hi Ive had an Ipod since” and then I turned it on again and typed more then I decided to try again so I did….. Well I won’t torture every body with some information every1 should know by now, but anyway I did IT and the screen flashed white so I guess if anyone has the same problem that I did about 30 secs. ago scroll up and look at the comments before dis and see how to completely shut down your iPod/iPhone and it will work again!

When you get to the bottom of a particularly long thread or page (like this one) rapidly tap the top of the screen twice.
You will shoot back up to the top of the page where you can go straight to the search window and go somewhere else.
Just used the hold number key and slide thing to get characters. And the space bar double tap thing for a full stop. Top tips ta YNWA

I don’t know if anyone has found this out yet..but there’s a way to make the iPod Touch run into Shuffle mode. I’m not talking about the shuffle option in the playlist but it will play random songs across all the playlists in your iPod. Here’s how..
Play any song from any playlist
Pause the song
Press and hold the home button for a few seconds and it will show up the home screen
Now tap the home button twice in quick succession
A small navigation box should appear..if it doesn’t then try by tapping the home button twice again.
Tap the play button on the navigation box.
The iPod is now in Shuffle mode!

I have to agree with cloud. Its pretty annoying when people post the same comments over and over again! I saw people posting about the screen capture directly under someone that had posted the same thing! People are so ignorant some times… Also, why can’t anyone spell worth shit? I’m not even kidding, it seems like the population of people that can spell common words is diminishing.

25 Nov 2009 at 08:36
Sometimes, when I try to turn on the volume, it doesn’t turn on at all. (This can happen with either video or music.) I try to drag the slider, and it automatically goes back down to nothing (like trying to keep a rubber band stretched). I would try to use the little volume clicker on the side (I have 2nd gen), and the volume STILL doesn’t turn on (and the slider shows the same exact reaction). If I restart it, the error stops, but I have had this problem MULTIPLE times! How can I make it stop permanently?

you will have to jailbreak your ipod before being able to download summerboard or winterboard. you can jailbreak your ipod by going to http://www.blackrain.com and dowloading the link. and after you have jailbroken there will be a icon on your homescreen called “black rain” hit that and from there you will be able to download something called Cydia, once you have donwloaded that you will be able to download winterboard.

I have just found something that i didn’t know the touch could do!
If you have a 3rd gen touch with the in line volume controls on the earphone cable, pressing both the up and down volume keys together will PAUSE the track. I think this is very useful!!
I am probably not the first person to find this out but please tell me if I am! It would be cool to know.
Great guide by the way, it really helps for these tips to be written down somewhere!

I’m 45 and grew up with LP’s, 8 tracks, rotary phones, etc. VCR’s were brand new and there were no CD’s DVD’s, or cell phones. We got to the moon with the computing power of today’s $3 calculator. Whats wrong with everyone? I cant believe that with all these comments, no one mentioned the tip that if you press the power button and the home button, you’ll see a loud flash! Then, and then, get this, when you go to your photos, omg your not gonna believe this! But when you go to your photos. I dont even know why im wasting my time telling you all this, you wont believe me. But, whatever you were looking at when that loud flash scared you, is now a picture. Yep, its true. No BS, honest to gods truth. Check it out for yourself. And dont give the hint up and take all the credit, this is my glory!

11 May 2010 at 09:41
i didnt read all these comments but if you are in an app, and listening to music, and you don’t want to exit the app, go to music, and switch the song, you can Double tap the home button and a box will pop up with a play/pause button, forward, reverse, and volume options.
Victor: that does not restart your ipod. you have to hold the button. then slide to power off.
@eman
actually, smart@$$, it does support flash. you are the dumb@$$. it is an app, btw

Hey! One thing I found out is that if you hold down the button that shuts it off and the home button (at the same time) it will take a picture of your screen! It will be saved in saved photos. Cool huh!
by Frank
14 May 2010 at 19:35
When listening to music while in side view, how do you skip to the next song? The only button remaining is the play/pause button. Thanks.

If you have any problems at all with your ipod u should first try turning it complety off (hold in the power button) if that doesnt work then plug it into the computer itunes should detect the problem and fix it. i did this when my ipod had a white screen and wouldnt do anything. and if that doesnt work then i would suggest calling apple. hope this helps

When on front page of iPod slide to the right and you can search for stuff on your iPod
by Jamie
28 Jul 2010 at 04:49
@Nathan you should regularly drain the battery to under 20% then give it a full charge. Also turn of notifications. Turn Auto lock to 1 or 2 mins and disable auto brightness. Also turn off bluetooth if you have it.

Want to opt out of the interest-based advertising on your ipod touch?
Go to this link on your ipod: (May take a second visit to become active. Once it works it will say Successfully opted out)

Jailbroken? (Back up on itunes and go to http://www.jailbreakme.com on your ipod).
Install SBsettings via Cydia. This will allow you to swipe from left to right on the battery / status bar to bring up a new menu. From here you can turn off wifi / bluetooth and SSH (edit your toggles in the SBsettings options to see this option). Turning these off will save your battery!
If you’ve had your ipod for a long time or used it a hell of a lot over a couple of years, battery performance may deteriorate. A replacement battery is a cheap and simple fix that would have you feeling proud that you did it and happy with the new life breathed into your ipod.

@John
if your iPod is jailbroken then you are going to have to re jailbreak it, and if it isn’t then you have to re-synch it with iTunes. You reset your iPod :p…. Next time just tap the sleep button and don’t hold it down.

Hello stu, sorry to hear your iPods not working, i am no expert but it sounds to me as if you have a short circuit which is making it cut out when switching it on or maybe you where downloading something where the file was to big and caused a system overload which could be stoping it booting up, i would give it a full charge, connect to your pc and reinstall sortware, you will lose music etc but if it’s not working then you’ve not really lost anything let me know how you get on and merry christmas

If you are having trouble with your battery dying fast turn off you wifi, if you have your wifi on it wastes more battery, so if you are not using your wifi I suggest you turn it off. Also if you start charging when you only have 20% of your battery left that helps it alot. Does anyone know how to move an app from one page of apps to another? I have a 4th generation 32 gigibite If that information is needed. Thanks and I hope my advice worked!

THIS HAS NOT BEEN SAID YET!! IF YOU HOLD DOWN ONE OF THE APPS AND DRAG IT TO ANOTHER ONE IT CREATES A FOLDER TO MINIMIZE SPACE IN YOUR IPOD. YOU CAN FIT UP TO 12 APPS INTO 1 FOLDER.
ITS AMAZING
