- Ultimate iPod touch tips and tricks list Part 2

As the iPod touch doesn’t come with a manual we have compiled the ultimate list of tips and tricks for operating and managing your iPod touch with more control:
Update: It took us a while but we have finally updated the list with all the new tips and tricks from newer os revisions and those submitted by the comments.
1 Quick Music Controls
Double clicking the home button in any application, or with the screen off will bring up the music controls.
2Force App Exit
To completely exit an application to save battery power. Press and holding the home button for approximately 5-8 seconds. This will help boost battery life if you run lots of different apps regularly.
3 Quick Symbol Input
Holding down letters on the keyboard will pop up the accents/symbols associated with those letters. Once it pops up, slide your finger over to the accent/symbol you like.
4 Delete Mail
When you’re in the Mail apps inbox view, slide your finger from left to right on a message and a ‘delete’ button will appear. This also applies in the list view of the Videos application.
5 Zoom in
In Safari double tap to zoom in. You can also “pinch” (putting your thumb and index finger on the screen and pinching in and out) to zoom in Safari and in Pictures.
6 Charge from any USB Port
You can charge your iPod Touch from any powered USB port. Such as a computer, printer, media centre.
7 Video Resume
If your watching a video and want to resume it later tap the “done” button and it will remember the videos progress next time you open it. Same with music/podcasts.
8 Larger Keyboard
When typing a lot of text in Safari turn it to horizontal view. The keyboard will be bigger and you can get a better grip of the Touch while typing with two thumbs.
9 Quick Number Input
When typing if you want to add something from the numbers keyboard just hold down the numbers and slide your finger to the number or symbol you want, and release. It will take you back to your letters keyboard. This also works by holding the ‘shift’ key and sliding your finger to apply capital letters.
10 View the url before you visit
When viewing a website in Safari, if you want to check the url of a link before clicking it, hold your finger on the link and a bubble will appear showing the URL that the link is tied to.
11 Open Links in New Window
A quick way to open a link in a new window in Safari is to open a new page, tap the bookmarks icon, tap the history folder and direct yourself to the last page you were just on and open the link from there.
12 Audiobook Chapters
When listening to an audiobook, iTunes and your iPod create a new chapter list unrelated to the subject of the book. It’s accessible using the same control used for viewing audio tracks (upper right of screen).
13 Fix Typo’s
Make a typo? Press and hold the word you spelt wrong and a magnifying glass will appear. Slide your finger back and forwth to move the cursor.
14 Finish your sentence
When typing, if you press the space bar twice after a word it will insert a period and another space.
15 Horizontal Keyboard for IM’ing
If you wish to use the horizontal keyboard to chat on AIM, MSN, Yahoo, GTalk, ICQ, etc. Using Safari go to the site www.meebo.com and use it there.
16 Map quick Zoom out
In Google Maps, double tapping zooms in as expected, but single tapping with two fingers zooms out.
17 Movie Controls
When watching a movie press pause and press foward ( but don’t release it ) this will make your video go slow motion to fast foward just dont press pause beforehand.
18 Quick Tap
When you’re scrolling through a long webpage in Safari – if you tap the bar at the top of your screen containing the time and battery, Safari will automatically scroll up to the top of the document/page and the show address bar.

Whats wrong with everyone? I cant believe that with all these comments, no one mentioned the tip that if you press the power button and the home button, you’ll see a loud flash! Then, and then, get this, when you go to your photos, omg your not gonna believe this! But when you go to your photos. I dont even know why im wasting my time telling you all this, you wont believe me. But, whatever you were looking at when that loud flash scared you, is now a picture. Yep, its true. No BS, honest to gods truth. Check it out for yourself. And dont give the hint up and take all the credit, this is my glory!

i didnt read all these comments but if you are in an app, and listening to music, and you don’t want to exit the app, go to music, and switch the song, you can Double tap the home button and a box will pop up with a play/pause button, forward, reverse, and volume options.
Victor: that does not restart your ipod. you have to hold the button. then slide to power off.
@eman
actually, smart@$$, it does support flash. you are the dumb@$$. it is an app, btw

Hey! One thing I found out is that if you hold down the button that shuts it off and the home button (at the same time) it will take a picture of your screen! It will be saved in saved photos. Cool huh!

When listening to music while in side view, how do you skip to the next song? The only button remaining is the play/pause button. Thanks.

If you have any problems at all with your ipod u should first try turning it complety off (hold in the power button) if that doesnt work then plug it into the computer itunes should detect the problem and fix it. i did this when my ipod had a white screen and wouldnt do anything. and if that doesnt work then i would suggest calling apple. hope this helps

@Nathan you should regularly drain the battery to under 20% then give it a full charge. Also turn of notifications. Turn Auto lock to 1 or 2 mins and disable auto brightness. Also turn off bluetooth if you have it.

Want to opt out of the interest-based advertising on your ipod touch?
Go to this link on your ipod: (May take a second visit to become active. Once it works it will say Successfully opted out)

Jailbroken? (Back up on itunes and go to http://www.jailbreakme.com on your ipod).
Install SBsettings via Cydia. This will allow you to swipe from left to right on the battery / status bar to bring up a new menu. From here you can turn off wifi / bluetooth and SSH (edit your toggles in the SBsettings options to see this option). Turning these off will save your battery!
If you’ve had your ipod for a long time or used it a hell of a lot over a couple of years, battery performance may deteriorate. A replacement battery is a cheap and simple fix that would have you feeling proud that you did it and happy with the new life breathed into your ipod.

@John
if your iPod is jailbroken then you are going to have to re jailbreak it, and if it isn’t then you have to re-synch it with iTunes. You reset your iPod :p…. Next time just tap the sleep button and don’t hold it down.
