tips and tricks

As the iPod touch doesn’t come with a manual we have compiled the ultimate list of tips and tricks for operating and managing your iPod touch with more control:

When you’re scrolling through a long webpage in Safari - if you tap the bar at the top of your screen containing the time and battery, Safari will automatically scroll up to the top of the document/page and the show address bar.

Double clicking the home button in any application, or with the screen off will bring up the music controls.

To completely exit an application to save battery power. Press and holding the home button for approximately 5-8 seconds. This will help boost battery life if you run lots of different apps regularly.

Holding down letters on the keyboard will pop up the accents/symbols associated with those letters. Once it pops up, slide your finger over to the accent/symbol you like.

When you in the Mail apps inbox view, slide your finger from left to right on a message and a ‘delete’ button will appear. This also applies in the list view of the Videos application.

In Safari double tap to zoom in. You can also “pinch” (putting your thumb and index finger on the screen and pinching in and out) to zoom in Safari and in Pictures.

You can charge your iPod Touch from any powered USB port. Such as a computer, printer, media centre.

If your watching a video and want to resume it later tap the “done” button and it will remember the videos progress next time you open it. Same with music/podcasts.

When typing a lot of text in Safari turn it to horizontal view. The keyboard will be bigger and you can get a better grip of the Touch while typing with two thumbs.

When typing if you want to add something from the numbers keyboard just hold down the numbers and slide your finger to the number or symbol you want, and release. It will take you back to your letters keyboard. This also works by holding the ’shift’ key and sliding your finger to apply capital letters.

When viewing a website in Safari, if you want to check the url of a link before clicking it, hold your finger on the link and a bubble will appear showing the URL that the link is tied to.

A quick way to open a link in a new window in Safari is to open a new page, tap the bookmarks icon, tap the history folder and direct yourself to the last page you were just on and open the link from there.

When listening to an audiobook, iTunes and your iPod create a new chapter list unrelated to the subject of the book. It’s accessible using the same control used for viewing audio tracks (upper right of screen).

Make a typo? Press and hold the word you spelt wrong and a magnifying glass will appear. Slide your finger back and forwth to move the cursor.

When typing, if you press the space bar twice after a word it will insert a period and another space.

If you wish to use the horizontal keyboard to chat on AIM, MSN, Yahoo, GTalk, ICQ, etc. Using Safari go to the site www.meebo.com and use it there.

In Google Maps, double tapping zooms in as expected, but single tapping with two fingers zooms out.

when watching a movie  press pause and press foward ( but don’t release it ) this will make your video go slow motion to fast foward just dont press pause beforehand.

Thanks for all the tips! When I exited out of music once, a small gray box appeared with a large volume icon box appeared and had a slider with boxes to change the volume. This was NOT the double-tap home button menu. I’ve been trying to figure out the shortcut for this, but so far I haven’t seen it again. Can you help me?

    Thanks,

An excelent tip for Ipod touch or ipod phones.
I have found that by wrapping a clean cloth around my finger it avoids finger marks and grease marks on my ipod touch screen. One could make a cloth finger sleeve or cloth thimble to use as an add on for the ipod touch or iphone.

hi cory. Been on youtube, just type in iPod touch volume. It seems to be that when you are adjusting the volume then press home it does that. I think that the funny volume thing is there for when you use the contrller when its in the dock so that its easier to when you are far away from it.

A single press of the power button whilst using the Touch will power off the screen and lock the iPod but continue to play music etc…just press the home key to resume the screen. Saves accidental pressing and saves power!

  8. BY Gavin Lowle AT July 9th, 2008 at 12:44 pm

If you’ve used my previous tip regarding ’standby mode’ try this - whilst at black screen but listening to music, double press the home button to bring up music controls without unlocking the Touch. Just hit the power button again to send back to standby (or wait 1 minute and it will return to standby regardless of auto-lock timeout).

To get that box, double tap the home button on the bottom of the touch. It has back, skip, pause, and volume control, and can be used from any app, or so the directions claim…

  28. BY Joey AT December 13th, 2008 at 9:35 pm

    To Hexxys:
You have a 2nd generation iPod touch, and Cory Wilson has a 1st generation, so Cory doesn’t have the volume rocker on the side, but you do. The reason the grey box shows, Cory, is because it’s in the 1st generation’s code, but it’s never used because the 1st generation has no volume rocker.

I had problems connecting my Touch to the internet. Solved it by going into the control page for my netgear router (don’t know if this bis unique to this make) then put in the mac code fot the Touch (its in Settings/general/wifi on the Touch) save this and then try to reconnect. The Touch will ask for your wep key for your router, enter this and you should be connected.

    @ Jay

You may already have found the answer yourself Jay but if you right click on the album without any art in i-tunes, then select the “artwork” tab, you can add a jpeg/bmp/png file as an album cover. Don’t forget to re-synch though.

You can also edit album or song info in the same way.

  49. BY Clara AT January 9th, 2009 at 6:43 am

Cory wilson. When you double click the home button, a boc appears witha fastforward, rewind, pause/play and volume button. If you slide the volume button back and forth while double clicking the home button, the icon you described will appear. This happened to me and i tried many different things to firgur it out. Now when i try it, his shortcut only works some of the time. Also, with the built in volume key, the ipod 3G has this when you change the volume with the volume key.

You can’t connect with the Internet because you didn’t pay for it and you DON’T know the password. Geez, if you want T3H INTERNETZ so badly, buy a Wi-Fi device. Sheesh.

Okay, so, I’ve been on the internet with my ipos and it works. I have wireless connection so I just go on it when I’m in my bed or something. I was on it this morning and all of a sudden, it says it can not connect because it could not find the server. When I check the signal, it says I was still connected to my wireless connection and I had the three bars and everything. I waited all day because I thought maybe it was just a temperary thing but hours it still wont connect back. It just…stopped working. I would like a possible answer to why this happened or at least theories. Is it possible that by browsing a certain site that it made it messed up? :S
I would really like some help, because I’m confused at the fact that it suddenly stopped working while I was using it and how I can not use it even though it shows I am still connected.

  57. BY DiddyD AT January 23rd, 2009 at 11:23 am

Hmm… I see no one else covered this yet, but if you press the sleep/power button and the home button at the same time, it will take a screen shot of whatever you are doing at the moment.

Seriously, I am the first person to report this, right? (/me waits for yet another person to post this tip after me.)

  69. BY murch AT February 11th, 2009 at 2:18 am

In addition to the home/power button screen capture.. when you plug the iPod in to your computer (well on my vista pc anyway), it will recognise it as a digital camara an you can naviagte to the screen caputre in windows explorer.. without using iTunes. Unfortunately, it looks like it’s read only, so you can’t actually use it as portable storage. But at least there is something you don’t have to use iTunes for.

  70. BY Adam AT February 12th, 2009 at 9:09 am

You CAN USE ANY USB port to charge but IT HAS TO BE USB 2.0. PS2 was long before USB 2.0 came about. You can change your dock items by holding down on any app until they start to shake then just drag that app into your dock.

    I have some answers.
Okay, if your iPod touch can’t sence your finger try to re-boot. If still nothing use customer support at apple.com.
If your safari isn’t working (Duh) buy wireless for your home.
Now, here is something not posted yet, I read EVERY COMMENT AND FORUM ON THIS PAGE
It’s mostly just for messin with ur friend with a 2G.
Hold the volume up button and press the home twice.
It makes it where they can’t turn the volume down LOL. To deactivate it press the volume up button THEN the volume down button will work again.

Hey this is for Gabriel (feb2)
Im sure your ipod touch works normally now, but heres a reason. The ipod touch is heat sensitive (unlike the nintendo ds).. So it may have been that your finger was too cold (since you were outside) or you were using your fingernail. Also if your ipod touch is warm, it is harder for it to sense your finger.
Btw, i think the only way too change your springboard wallpaper is to have your ipod touch jailbroken.

I hope this stuff helps :) Hey this is for Gabriel (feb2)

To change the background on the homescreen you need to jailbreak your iPod touch/iphone but this may cause you not to be able to download some apps from iTunes.

    To get album covers that arent available on itunes go on www.google.co.uk/images then search like this (without “” or stuff in brackets) ;
(eg) - “lily allen(artist) the fear (song name) album cover”
    then hit search

When I try to do the screenshot thing, the volume box comes up (2nd Gen) and ruins the pic. Plus hitting volume up and home takes a pic. It’s like my power and volume up buttons have fused. Rebooting no help. Ideas?

How do I delete files from Itunes that are duplicates?

  95. BY harry AT April 25th, 2009 at 6:43 am

cory (first post): are you sure your not just accidently hitting the volume rocker? cos that sounds exactly like what happens when you press the rocker when not listening to music or watching a video.

Stupid guys………screenshot tip has been posted earlier hundredss of timess…. so no more this tip please….
    My tip….

1)you can restrict few of the application with a passcode…
Go to Settings/general/restrictions and enable restrictions which will make certains applications disappear from your ipod (Applications like safari, itunes store, you tube etc….

    Tip 2)
Zooming in a picture by either double tapping it
or holding the picture with two fingers(One thunb and one finger) and moving them away zooms in ur pics while moving closer ur fingers, zooms out….

Haft of the post here are about the screen capture. And NO YOU ARE NOT THE FIRST ONES TO POST IT. Read before you post. Sheesh. And to those who cant connect, its not the ipod that has a problem, most of the time its the router or dsl modems. But in most cases posted here, the problem is the user.
